I wish it werent the case but, its not everyday that I get a CD from an artist that I can just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. There is usually a song or two that I just cant force myself to get through. Not at all the case with Welcome. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish.

This playfulness is captured on several tracks but none more so than on What A World (Babygirl). Splash's vocals ride the cool keys and guitar licks like a cloud hopping astronaut - "What a world, look around, baby everything you see, we could live in a world that would be so N-IC-E. What a world, babygirl, you could make it real for me, we could live in a world, you could be my L-O-V-E."

Plant Life - Time Traveler Album Review

The Los Angeles-based group is the brainchild of Jack Splash who put together a 12-piece brand to create a sound that mixes up old school hip hop, '70s soul and a whole load of funk. Think Prince meets Andre 3000 and The Ohio Players. Their second album is Time Traveler which seriously puts the FUN in funk and sparks feelings of joy, moments of involuntary body movement and tongue in cheek playfulness.

Funk music has always had its eccentric characters - George Clinton and Bootsy Collins immediately come to mind but you can also cite Isaac Hayes, Sly Stone and more recently Jamiroquai. But if you are gonna make funky music .. it is essential to have a fun and colorful nature. Plant Life carry on this tradition.

The mellowest moment comes from the final track, Fool For U, which has Splash's vocals laid over an old Isley Brothers track (Don't Say Goodnight). Splash smooths out his delivery here and croons about a fractured relationship. My favourite cut here is Sumthin About Her which you can't help but clap along to. The bass line will get your hips grinding and you head bopping - guaranteed! This is made more fun thanks to the cheeky syth stabs laid through out the chorus.

Content isn't too heavy on the brain, with wholesome love musings being the main serve. But this album isn't about finding deep and meaningful epiphanies - it's about wrapping your ears around some cool and body moving sounds. In the end Time Traveler takes the listener on a trip back to the origins of funk through to the synthesized sonics of the 80s and right into a new phase of musical expression. Get moving!

The most common EMG pickups are the EMG 81 and 85. The EMG 81 is usually considered to be the lead pickup and is more commonly used in the bridge position, while the EMG 85 is mainly used as a rhythm pickup more used in the neck position.

Personally I have had great success with using EMG pickups in a Gibson Les Paul and 7 string ESP guitar especially if you are into heavier sounding music. The clarity, deeper tone, and added gain are what make the pickups more suitable. One negative thing about the EMG active pickups is the need for a 9 volt battery, but it's not much of a problem because the battery lasts for a long time. You just need to make sure you replace the battery at least every 6 months because of tone loss over time.

I have every major sonic youth release, and I gotta disagree with the few negative reviews on this cd. Every SY album is different then the next really, but this one shines brighter with individuality. You can tell they had a lot of fun with this album, and went in a very different direction. I love the album though. It's not their best, but anyone who likes sonic youth should own it. I'll admit it's hit or miss; some songs are pretty bad (and I love almost all SY stuff), but others are brilliant. If all other SY releases are on Earth, this cd is out in space. It combines the mellow ambience of NYC Ghosts & Flowers with Dirty's hard hitting riffs and distortion. When I'm in the mood for Experimental Jet Set, nothing can come close

Sonic Youth is not a Robot. They are here to make you react to the now. This world is spinning at a certain frequency and this album whirls in your mind like a celling fan on a hot summer night. This is one of the best Headphone recordings I own out of my 1000+ collection. Thurston and Kim's songs dominate this album for me much like Siter. If you like Sonic Youth this album Is A must have along with 1991 The Year Punk Broke Through. Sweet Shine Is my Favorite Song. Thats right period.

Guitars, or similar instruments, have been around for thousands of years. The Electric guitar was first manufactured in the 1930s by Rickenbacker. Original Electric guitars used tungsten pickups. Pickups basically convert the vibration of the strings into electrical current, which is then fed into the amplifier to produce the sound.

The very earliest Electric guitars featured smaller soundholes in the body. These guitars are known as semi-hollow body Electric guitars and still are somewhat popular today, mainly due to the fact that they are flexible guitars.

The Electric guitar that is most prevalent today is the solid body Electric guitar. The solid body guitar was created by musician and inventor Les Paul in 1941. It is a guitar made of solid wood with no soundholes. The original solid body guitar created by Paul was very plainit was a simple rectangular block of wood connected to a neck with six steel strings. Les Pauls original solid body guitar shape has, of course, changed from the original rectangular shape to the more rounded shape Les Paul guitars have today.

The History

Around the same period of time, another inventor named Leo Fender came up with a solid body Electric guitar of his own. In the late 1940s, Fender introduced the Fender Broadcaster Electric guitar. The Broadcaster, which was renamed the Stratocaster, was officially introduced to the public in 1954. The Strat, as it is now known, was a very different guitar in comparison to the Les Paul. It had a different shape, different hardware and was significantly lighter. Fenders Stratocaster Electric guitar is the second most popular guitar in the world, second to only the Les Paul.

A Brief History Of The Electric Guitar

However, with the use of pickups, it was possible to create guitars without soundholes (like the Acoustic and Classical guitars have) that still had the ability to be heard, if plugged into amplifiers. These guitars are called solid body Electric guitars.

The Electric guitar hasnt been around nearly as long as the Acoustic and Classical guitars. In fact, the Electric guitar was created just 70 years ago (the 1930s) by Adolph Rickenbacker. Since that time, the Electric guitar has greatly evolved to the where it is today. In this article, well go over the history of the Electric guitar.

Over the years, other companies, such as Ibanez, Jackson, Paul Reed Smith, ESP and Yamaha have all produced solid body Electric guitars of their own. However, most Electric guitars still feature the familiar shape of a Les Paul or Strat guitar.

6) Spend $30,000+ on Recording a New Album

Certainly, recording a quality album is every band's rightful priority. Bands need to spend enough that they get prime recordings and work with a producer they feel comfortable with. And there are definitely advantages to working with a "name" producer. However, at your current stage, it may make more sense to work with an up-and-coming producer who has worked with many notable bands, rather than a super producer who has worked with legends. Besides, if your band spends all of its money on recording the "perfect" album, with the "perfect producer, in the "perfect" studio, what's left to actually sell your "perfect" album? Remember, good albums don't sell themselves. If they did, then you wouldn't have had to obtain this outside funding in the first place, would you?

1) Drinking and/or Drugs (Part 1)

Yeah, I've heard it all. "Its part of the rock and roll lifestyle!" "It's only when I'm on the road." "What are you, straight-edge? Everybody does it." To be clear, we're not talking about having a couple of beers. We're talking about the undefined drug cocktails, the band member who blacks out and has no recollection of what he did last night and last night didn't remember who he was. We're talking about those with a real problem. And if it your band mate's problem it inevitably soon becomes your problem. Drugs and are a great way to end up working at a car wash and being referred to locally as, "that guy who used to be kinda famous." The advice to avoid this scenario is simple: if you don't want to end up an alcoholic or an addict, avoid drugs and alcohol. The moment these scourges start to interfere with your band, you have a problem. And the moment you start denying that they're interfering with your band, you have a big problem. If this sounds like you, please get healthy and contact your local AA branch or MusiCares MAP (Musician's Assistance Program).

It is clear just how focused your band needs to be in determining how your funding ought to be allotted. Getting funded is only the first step of many that will directly impact your career. So remember to ask yourself the next time that irresistible temptation comes along - is this really necessary to our long-term career? If not, perhaps it's better to avoid it until there comes a time where you can afford to lose a million dollars.

2) Drinking and/or Drugs (Part 2)

I have met countless bands who complain that they're broke. They go on about how they have no money to buy food or gas yet put money into 12-packs of Budweiser as if they owned stock. Now, let's do a little math. Assuming you don't have an endorsement where you obtain it for free, let's say you run a band bar tab of $60 for your various alcoholic beverages of choice. If you're playing even just on the weekends, you're easily spending over $400 a month on alcohol. And if you're a full-time touring band...you can see where much of your money is going. And don't even get me started on bands that can't afford new guitar strings and yet somehow manage to find enough money to buy their drug of choice every night. These intoxicated scenarios lead to a simple, yet poignant question: Which do you want more drugs or success, because the two don't go together well for long.

4) Indulge in Personalized Fancy Stage Gear

Another phenomenon I've witnessed is that bands with some money behind them seem to forget who they are. Do I mean this in some existential sense? No, I mean this literally, because they insist on everything - equipment, instruments, body parts - being emblazoned with their band name. And though there is no problem with this in theory, when you've finally obtained some capital do you really want to spend thousands of dollars on something as trivial as customized, matching road cases? Remember, at this stage it's not about what you want, it's about what you need and how what you need can lead to an amplified band profile, which results in increased sales and opportunities.

My last article touched upon the importance of bands investing in themselves, and the different types of financial options available for bands looking to take a calculated gamble on themselves. So now you've got some money to your band's name. You are on top of the world, ready to make a positive change and take your band to the next level. But you also feel dangerously rich and this newfound, fleeting wealth is going to define you as a band from this point forward. How your band uses its collective willpower (or doesn't), how it handles temptation (or doesn't) will determine whether your group is building a sustainable, long-term career or is merely dealing with fleeting infamy and locals-only fame. And no matter how money you are working with, mistakes are expensive to make and can quickly add up. So, for bands that are truly looking to capitalize on their new financial status, here are some tips on how to avoid squandering your newfound pseudo-wealth so you don't again end up working two odd jobs without enough money to pay the rent.

There are two points to take away from this. First off, bands, you have no business at this stage in your career spending $10,000 on anything that isn't going to have a direct effect on your sales. Secondly, "Because it would be cool," is not a substantial reason to spend lots of money on things that aren't going to catapult your career to another level.

3) Spend $10,000 on a Music Video

I have met several bands though the years that are able to obtain some money and excitedly tell me the first thing they are planning to lay down some significant cash on is a music video. My reply is generally, "Why?" Because in and of itself, how exactly does a music video further your career? Does it independently increase your sales? Can you sell it to make you money to spend on other things? Do music video viewers tend to be motivated enough, without any other source of promotion, to buy your music? Invariably, the band gets defensive and mumbles something along the lines of, "We thought it would be cool."

Currently, The Used is composed of Bert McCracken (lead vocals and piano), Quinn Allman (guitar and backup vocals), Jeph Howard (bass and backup vocals), and Dan Whitesides (drums). In the past, the group also worked with other musicians, such as Greg Bester, who served as touring guitarist during the early 2000s. Most notably, Branden Steineckert, who provided backup vocals and played drums, was kicked out of the band during the summer of 2006.

The Used released their first full-length studio album, which was self-titled, in 2002. The public readily accepted the new group, and they enjoyed a wealth of early success. Four singles ("A Box Full of Sharp Objects," "Buried Myself Alive," "Blue and Yellow," and "The Taste of Ink") helped claim a following. The album soon went platinum.

The future of The Used involves another CD and DVD compilation and a couple of tour dates. A new album is set for a 2007 release, and the group is adjusting to their new drummer, Dan Whitesides.

The Used - A Band Fused From Diverse Talents

During the mid-1990s, The Used was known in their early days as a local band called Froglick. At this time, Brenden Steineckert (founding member and drummer) was grouped with Quinn Allman (guitarist) and Jeph Howard (bassist). It was soon agreed that a full-time singer or frontman would be needed to boost the popularity of the band. Auditions were held, but a suitable member could not be found. Upon the suggestion of Allman, a friend from school (Bert McCracken) was asked to join and gladly accepted.

Brief Group History

Hailing from Orem, Utah, the alternative rock band called The Used has made its mark on the public with a couple of albums and music videos released under Reprise Records. With songs like "A Box Full of Sharp Objects" and "The Bird and the Worm," the band has established itself as a thriving music group. With an active following since 2001 (and still going strong), The Used possess a history of making music that begins in the middle of the '90s.

In 2004, the group released "In Love and Death," which also became platinum-certified, selling more than three million copies. The David Bowie remake of "Under Pressure" featured My Chemical Romance and was offered as a bonus track on the 2005 re-release of the album. Additional songs on the album included "Take It Away" and "I Caught Fire." Set for a 2007 release, The Used is planning on sharing "Lies for the Liars," which is also set to come with a DVD.

Current Members

The group began to record a few demos and hold a handful of local shows. John Feldmann, a member of the punk group, Goldfinger, heard the band and, in 2001, encouraged Reprise Records to sign the group. Within a couple of months, a ten-track demo CD was produced. The band would later become The Used after finding out that a band in Boston already went by the moniker Used.

While the meaning of the runes is still subject to debate this day, depending on your source, the most widely accepted version is that each member chose a symbol to represent them on the album cover. Robert Plant's symbol of a feather in a circle comes from an ancient mythical Mu civilization, and represents truth for Plant. John Bonham's rune of the three interlocking circles has a mysterious origin, but Plant has said that he thought it implied the trilogy of man, woman and child (or it was the emblem of Ballantine Beer inverted). It is an old configuration but one of the better form of configuration where the music is reproduced quite correctly. Here, two omnidirectional mics are placed apart by a dummy head put in between to reflect a dummy human head. XY Configuration

MS is acronym for Mid or Side configuration. It is one of the most interesting of all the configurations. For this configuration one Cardioid mic or an omnidirectional mic is used along with a Figure 8 mic. Figure 8 is a type of mic where both the left and right channel possesses a transducer facing 180 degree from each other. It is a type of stereo mic, hence the two channels, left and right, are distinct from each other.

Most simple songs contain just 3 chords called primary chords. So even a stark beginner can learn 3 simple chords well enough to strum along and accompany himself as he sings. But after that, the sky is the limit there are thousands of possible chords, so it is up to the individual guitarist as to how many he or she want to master.

Broken chords (also referred to as arpeggios) are three or more notes that aren't played at the same time but closely enough to still be heard as a group or whole. And even the three-note rule is open to the occasional exception; some guitar chords consist of only two notes, but they still function as chords because they work diatonically in the same way that a major or minor chord would.

So how many chords does a guitarist really need to know?

Guitar chords, (chords played specifically on a guitar,) differ only from other types of chords by virtue of instrument; they're simply a series of three or more notes played together. These notes don't necessarily have to be played simultaneously, however.

Guitar chords might very well be the most important element of guitar playing; after all, they're the basis of what makes a song. Most people picking up a guitar for the first time figure out a few guitar chords before even going for their first lesson, and still more teach themselves guitar chords without any help from an instructor. Self-taught guitarists learn guitar chords in a number of ways. Some learn by listening to their favorite songs and slowly picking out the notes, a common yet often frustrating process. Others figure out guitar chords by learning to read guitar tab, a type of sheet music intended for fretted instruments that uses a graph-like chart to show where on the frets the fingers are placed. This is a 6-stringed instrument (three courses) meant to be held and played like a mandolin or banjo, rather than on the lap. It has a diatonic dulcimer fretboard and is tuned similarly to most dulcimers, D-A-D. The first and second strings are strung as one course, tuned in unison to D. It uses standard dulcimer strings. 1) The tonic note of the Aeolian mode must always be established. In other words, if we were analyzing a C Aeolian scale, the root note C must be voiced (established; played). It's always important to establish a tonal center with any mode.

The Aeolian Chords are: I minor, II diminished, bIII major, IV major, V minor (7), bVI major, and bVII major. There are typical and then, very strong Aeolian chord progressions. We'll examine both in this article.

1) I minor (C minor) progressing to the bVII major (Bb major), progressing to the I minor (C minor), progressing to the bVII major (Bb major), progressing to the bVI major (Ab), progressing to the bVII major (Bb), progressing to the I minor (C minor).

The Aeolian Mode is just one of the seven essential modes that every guitarist should have in his/her arsenal. Of course, the other modes are Dorian, Phrygian, Mixolydian, Lydian, Ionian, and Locrian. All of these are essential guitar scales that should be practiced daily.

keep in mind that, the actual theory involved here, ironically infers altered scale tones once we discuss key signatures other than the key of C major (key of no sharps). In the key of C major, half steps automatically occur between the 3rd and 4th degrees of the major scale, and then once again between the 7th and 8th degrees of the C major scale (no alterations are necessary). In every other key signature, the degrees of the scale must be altered (using sharp signs or flat signs) in order to create the specific formula needed (whole steps and half steps) to establish a major scale.

Once again, for purposes of this article we will be utilizing the C Aeolian Mode. By adding some difficulty, the learning process will be authentic. Therefore, prepare yourself for just a little confusion. However, with some concentration, any initial confusion should clear up shortly.

2) The third scale step must be used in order to establish the minor quality of the Aeolian Mode.

It's helpful to think of the Aeolian Mode as being rooted on the sixth degree of the major scale. For example, the scale tones for the C major scale are C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C. Therefore, the Aeolian root note would be A (rooted on the sixth degree of the major scale). Thus, A-B-C-D-E-F-G-A (Aeolian). Do you notice that the tonic note is present? Do you notice that the distance between A and C is a minor third interval? Also the 6th and 7th degree scale tones are natural (no alterations). This is why I offered this particular example in the key of C major (key of no sharps, no flats). It's easier to keep track of the theory.

TYPICAL AEOLIAN PROGRESSIONS: study the following progressions and transfer them to your guitar.

The quality of the Aeolian Mode is minor (minor 3rd interval between the root note of the scale and it's 3rd). For purposes of application, the following elements apply:

NOTE: Do not emphasize the bIII major because it tends to suggest the I major chord in the actual key signature. This takes away from the Aeolian flavor.

It's best to think of using triads (three part chords) when engaging in an Aeolian progression. My personal students are taught how to extend all chords to their fullest diatonic range. This adds flavor to any progression but will, most likely, annoy the strict theorists. There's something to be said about Pop-Rock; we can get away with a lot of rule breaking and our audiences love it.

Thus far, we've established the tonic note, the minor 3rd, and the use of the natural 6th and 7th degree scale tones for the Aeolian mode. It's safe to say that Aeolian, at this point, has been born.

NOTE: Notice that we brought our listener back to the tonic I minor (C minor). It's very important to establish a tonal center.

2) I minor (C minor) progressing to the bVII major (Bb), progressing to the bVI major (Ab), progressing to the IV minor (F minor), progressing to the I minor (C minor).

The Aeolian mode (also known as the pure minor scale or Natural Minor), as a stand alone musical mode (scale), is absolutely beautiful in sound and structure. Personally, I believe the Aeolian Mode to be the center of the musical universe. I, among others, believe this to be true for many reasons. Therefore, several of these reasons will be discussed throughout this article. You then, the reader, can decide for yourself as to the importance you place on this particular mode.

3) Only the natural 6th and 7th degree scale tones (no alterations) be used to attain and preserve the Aeolian modal flavor or essence.

In the end, music is based on sound. All of the theory in the world is just theory unless analyzed, practiced, and implemented. The guitar is a wonderful instrument. We should all strive to continuously educate ourselves in order to unlock it's endless secrets.
